NoSo is an anti-social networking site where you can go to “temporarily disengage yourself” from the online social networking environment.
Short for “No Social Networking,” NoSo operates around the creation of “non-events” for its users. It works by users setting up an event at a local venue (i.e. cafe, bookstore) and meeting other users there. Well, the users don’t actually meet–they sort of show up there, and do whatever it is they do, without talking to one another, but still enjoying a level of connectivity with these people that have joined them for the event.
Dubbed as inverted flash mobs, these NoSo events are capped off at 10 people per NoSo event. And in case you were curious, there’s little way of knowing who’s behind an actual NoSo account–your name does not show, because you’re assigned a number, and there’s no way to upload a user image (though images can be included in the creation of your NoSo event). They’re reminiscent of cafes that are full of people quietly working on their laptops, filling up a space, yet not speaking to one another.
The project grew from the creators’ experience with urban art, map mashups as means for finding new ways to explore one’s environment, and the physicality of the web 2.0 social networking experience. I like the way in which this project pokes fun at our schemas surrounding social networking, though I’d be dying to know who the other NoSo users were around me. And I do hope to see some interesting map mashups come from this project as well, with user contributions.
For a community that’s forming events with a polar opposite approach, try Wannago, which has just launched its Yes or Next feature.
