Each one has created a space that fits their unique personalities, producing living spaces that would drive Martha Stewart nuts.
Bill Tregle lives on a homemade houseboat in the middle of the Louisiana Bayou country. He dishes out crab legs and Cajun wisdom along with the how-to's of gator wrestling.
Ed and Diana Peden bought an old abandoned missile silo outside of Topeka, Kansas and converted it into an underground "castle" that can withstand the direct hit of a small nuclear bomb (not everybody can say that). Ed regularly conducts drum circles to counteract the "heavy energy" of the launch-pad living room.
Ben Skora has turned his home into a mechanical wonder - where the living room rotates, the kitchen appliances are retractable, a ski slope goes from the roof to the woods across the road, and all the electronic gadgets can be operated by codes entered over the phone. He's a master at jerry-rigging. His partner, Darlene Satrinano is a psychic and wants a job tracking down missing people.
Bob Walker and Francis Mooney have converted their entire home into a cat wonderland with cat tunnels and elevated catwalks and special playrooms - all to entertain their 11 cats. To earn a living, they photograph their kitties for calendars, greeting cards, and stuff. Are they truly cat people or are they just suffering from too many kitty-litter
fumes?
Linda Beech lives in one of the most remote valleys in Hawaii - her location is ideal, but a little tough to get to (she has to drive her 4×4 across a river to get home and only
then when the water level is low enough). Her residence is actually a treehouse that is powered by the natural waterfall in her backyard. It's a little isolated, but the scenery is amazing.
At times this movie is hilarious, but never in a mean-spirited way. It doesn't make fun of the people it's focusing on; it simply celebrates their uniqueness (we're not laughing at, we're laughing with). It also makes you wonder how the filmmaker found these people - was it with a simple questionnaire:
Three things you can say about all these people - they have chosen to live out their dreams, they would never be boring, and you wouldn't necessarily want them living next door.
